How to Design A Remote Life You Love
βFeeling Stuck? How to Reclaim Your Motivation and Design a Remote Life You Love"
Darcy Marie Mayfield has spent the past 11 years intentionally designing a life she lovesβa journey that hasnβt always been easy but has been deeply rewarding. As an advisor to Thrive Remotely and a monthly contributor to our newest "How to Design a Remote Life You Love" column, Darcy helps remote workers who feel "stuck" navigate the courage, time, and intentionality it takes to reimagine life beyond the chains of the office.

Have you ever felt like no matter what you do, nothing will change? Like no matter how many to-do lists you write, youβre still standing in the same place?
I know that feeling.
For remote workers, this sense of helplessness can creep in quietlyβmasked by freedom (and the guilt that comes with it). But what if I told you that you can break free?
Thereβs a name for this: learned helplessnessβthe belief that your actions donβt matter, born from setbacks that leave you feeling powerless.
But hereβs the truth: Youβre not powerless.
Motivation doesnβt just happenβitβs something you design for. And the good news is, even if it feels impossible right now, you can start taking small, intentional steps to shift your energy.
Create Boundaries to Reclaim Control
The first step? Separate work from life.
For me, having an office door to physically close is a game-changer. But Iβve also worked remotely in a 350 sq. ft. home with two people and a 65 lb. Golden Retrieverβso I get it. My solution? A DIY Murphy desk nailed to the wall.
Get creative. You got this.
Get Dressed and Show Up for Yourself
Put on real clothes, even if no one will see you.
Itβs a simple but powerful signal: Iβm showing up for me today.
And if you hate hard pants like me? Get some easy-wear you love and look fly in. Bonus: youβll be ready to move.
Move to Spark Momentum
When youβre stuck, your mind is the worst place to startβget your wiggles out.
Our bodies hold our emotions. Move them, and you move your energy.
For me, ClassPass helps. If I donβt show up, I get charged $17. Itβs just enough pain to keep me accountable.
And no, nothing will explode if you step away from Slack for an hour. Promise.
Youβre Not StuckβYouβre Starting
Designing your life is hard work.
But the hardest part? Taking that first step.

Donβt Wait for Motivation β Create It
Will Samson is a transformation expert, speaker, and author who built his business from a personal journey to reclaim motivation and purpose. After decades of searching for quick fixes, he realized lasting change requires patience, resilience, and interdependence. He is dedicated to helping individuals and organizations embrace Slow Changeβa process of intentional, meaningful growth that prioritizes long-term transformation over fleeting success.

When the world shut down in 2020βoffices empty, routines shattered, uncertainty hanging thick in the airβI had an excuse to sit still, waiting for motivation to show up.Β
But waiting doesnβt work.
It would be great if inspiration struck like lightning.Β
But I found itβs more like my first carβ you have to start pushing before the engine kicks in. So, I pushed. I launched my own business in the middle of the chaos, not because I had it all figured out, but because doing something felt better than doing nothing.
One of the first things I realized was that I needed peopleβreal conversations, shared energy, the kind of accountability that canβt be replaced by a podcast or a self-help book.Β
I started my own mastermind. A small, hand-picked group of like-minded professionals who, like me, werenβt willing to let isolation define their lives. We met online, swapped ideas, challenged each other, andβmaybe most importantlyβreminded one another why we connected in the first place.Β
They became a lifeline.
But even with the right people in my corner, some days motivation felt miles away.Β
Thatβs when I learned the most important lesson: action creates motivation, not the other way around. I stopped waiting for the spark and started movingβwriting one email, drafting one idea, reaching out to one new connection.Β
Small actions led to bigger momentum, and before I knew it, I wasnβt forcing myself to move forwardβI wanted to.
And when my mind felt stuck? I moved my body.Β
A walk, a stretch, anything to shake loose the mental fog. I learned that inspiration rarely strikes while staring at a screen, but it shows up when you step away, when you change your scenery, when you let movement untangle your thoughts.
Looking back, I didnβt find motivationβI built it.Β
And thatβs the thing about momentum. You donβt have to wait for it. You can create it.
