International Day of Happiness reminds us: joy isnāt separate from workāit belongs in our daily lives.
Remote professionals have a unique opportunity. Location independence isnāt just about convenience; itās a tool for creating a fulfilling life. But without intention, freedom can feel more like drifting than thriving.
The Myth of Endless Flexibility
When I first embraced remote work, I thought flexibility alone would create happiness. No commute, work from anywhereāI spent 3.5 years without a formal home. But soon, I found myself overworking, struggling with boundaries, and letting joy take a backseat.
Through trial and error, I realized:
ā
Remote work isnāt just about managing stressāitās about cultivating happiness.
ā
Intentional routines make the difference.
Your Lifestyle Medicine Cabinet
Instead of prescriptions, letās stock our Participatory Lifestyle Medicine (PLM) Cabinet with practices that nourish both work and life.
Iāve seen clientsāremote and in-officeāstruggle with this. When we donāt have structures that support both productivity and well-being, it affects us mentally, emotionally, and physically.
A Personal Wake-Up Call
I once packed my schedule with back-to-back sessions. At first, it felt great to be so productive. But soon:
šØ Creativity flatlined
šØ Sleep suffered
šØ I felt disconnected
My body signaledātight shoulders, low energy, restless nightsābut I ignored it. Only when I intentionally created space for joy (morning walks, creative play, unstructured breaks) did I regain clarity and balance.
The Balance of Structure & Flow
A well-stocked cabinet balances yang (structured, goal-oriented energy) with yin (fluid, regenerative energy):
š ļø Yang (Masculine) Scaffolding: Clear routines, time-blocking, deep work sessions.
šæ Yin (Feminine) Nourishment: Midday walks, creative play, slow mornings, reflection time.
The Key? Ongoing Adjustment
Balance is a moving target. Some weeks, structure takes over. Other times, we get lost in flow. The goal isnāt perfectionāitās awareness and adjustment.
Your Turn
This International Day of Happiness, ask yourself:
š¹ How can I use location independence for fulfillment, not just convenience?
š¹ What belongs in my Lifestyle Medicine Cabinet?

THRIVING TRIBE CHRONICLES
What Remote Happiness Means to Us

We asked readers and community members to share a personal short story on how working remotely has helped them create a satisfying and joyful life.
For me, joy doesnāt just sprout in isolation from certain wonderful moments. Itās built on a foundation of physical and mental health that makes more of those moments possible. To that end, remote work has been a game-changer that provides me the time and freedom I can use to eat healthier, exercise more and work more often from sunny, exotic locations that inspire and rejuvenate me.
Itās 2pm on a January afternoon. I am on a video call in Peru. My colleagues do not know that I am not wearing pantsā¦ just a bathing suit. I look past my computer to the beach, just feet away. Up next, thereās a break in my schedule and I cannot wait to use that time to swim in the ocean and eat a big plate of ceviche before joining my next meeting.
Remote work has given me the freedom to reclaim my mornings and add alternatively productive time to my schedule. Instead of sitting in traffic, I can now start my day with a coffee on my deck, or take a short hike during the day. This quiet time energizes me and brings a sense of calm that flows into my workday. It gives me a greater ability to be centered and present, which truly allows me to be more productive and creative. Itās the moments like these that make working remotely such a benefit āturning commuting hours into lifeās simple, yet still incredibly important, pleasures.
I feel lucky to understand what makes me happyāand even luckier to have remote work that lets me build a life around it. In the city, I had to "visit" nature, but now I live in it. Wildlife outside my window, wooded trails, and dark skies full of stars surround me. Itās a powerful antidote to excess screen time. Remote work gave me the freedom to work from my happy place, and I hope it allows others to find theirs too.
As a remote worker and an introvert, I find it challenging to get the social interaction I need while working. Two things have helped. I schedule time with colleagues to NOT talk about work, but about what is going on in our lives. Being remote, this is on my own terms, avoiding interruptions at my desk. I also help organize monthly happy hours. Those who want to join bring their preferred libation and chat about life. Through both of these pursuits, my social cup is filled. Happiness, joy, are found.
