For most of my career, I have managed teams.

I know how to create clarity, coach people, remove obstacles, build momentum, and help everyone move toward the goal. I teach, empower, equip, and then give people room to do great work.

I am not a micromanager.

Which is now quite inconvenient, because in this season of my life, the person I most need to micromanage is me.

Annoying. And true.

This summer looks different for me. I am helping build Abby AI, a tech startup in the direct selling space. I am also co-building Thrive Remotely, this newsletter and community, while we prepare to launch digital products as we move into our next chapter.

And for the first summer in years, I do not have a big team rhythm or constant work travel creating structure for me.

That sounds freeing.

It is. It is also quite dangerous.

Because remote work gives you the day, but it does not automatically give you the rhythm.

If I do not decide what matters this week, my inbox will. My phone will. My moods will. Other people’s priorities will. The “quick thing” will become the whole afternoon. And suddenly, this beautiful flexible life starts to feel less like freedom and more like chaos with a touch up my appearance button.

But, I do not want a cage. I left the cage.

I want agency. I want movement. I want spaciousness. I want to build meaningful work, enjoy Asheville while the mountains are showing off, see my friends, get outside, and stay open to love and connection, which sounds romantic until you remember it still has to fit somewhere between work, laundry, friends, and calendar logistics.

I am also trying to remember that my life is not something I get back to after the work is done.

So, here we are… I am learning that a container is not a cage.

A good container does not take away my freedom. It protects it.

A container says: this matters, so it gets a place.

My work matters.
My body matters.
My relationships matter.
My joy matters.
My future matters.

So this summer, I am giving myself a few simple anchors.

Focused work blocks before the day gets noisy.
Weekly planning moments to choose what actually matters.
Body or outdoor resets to remind me I am not just a brain attached to a laptop.
Intentional connection points so my life does not become all output and no nourishment.

Not a perfect schedule. Not a color-coded fantasy calendar. Just enough structure to keep me from drifting.

So here is the question:

What do you want this summer to feel like?

Calmer? More focused? More connected? More adventurous? More spacious? More productive?

Pick one.

Then choose one small weekly habit that would make that feeling a reality.

Remote work gives us freedom.

But freedom with a little leadership?

That is where we start to thrive.
