I haven’t always worked remotely. Like many people, my first real taste of it came suddenly in 2020, when the world shut down in response to the pandemic. As a management consultant used to Monday–Thursday travel and in-person collaboration, I went from being constantly surrounded by teammates to a blur of back-to-back video calls.
I wasn’t thriving—I was just trying to stay afloat.
But five years later, a lot has changed…

LAST WEEK’S POLL RESULTS
What's your biggest challenge in making remote work truly work for you?

DAILY STEPS
Building Remote Trust
When I went remote, being overlooked taught me a crucial lesson: visibility matters as much as quality work.
I learned to ask real questions. Not just "how's it going?" but specific inquiries about colleagues' projects and challenges. The quality of our conversations transformed, and I gained insights I'd never have discovered otherwise.
I made staying visible intentional. Rather than lurking in digital shadows, I began contributing thoughtfully to Slack threads and email chains. These small digital breadcrumbs helped teammates remember I existed beyond video calls.
These micro-habits didn't just save my remote career—they helped me thrive in ways I never imagined possible.
