Remote work was supposed to feel like freedom. And yet for so many of us–whether we're leading distributed teams or contributing within them–it often feels heavier than expected. Not because we're doing something wrong, but because we're doing something different. And our culture hasn't caught up.
Many of us live inside an unspoken tension: We chose autonomy, flexibility, and the ability to shape our lives with intention–yet we still carry the invisible emotional load of feeling like we have to justify it.
For many of us, this guilt didn't start with remote work. It started years ago, inside systems that taught us our worth lived in our productivity, not in ourselves. I know this intimately. For years, I glorified the grind – arriving early, staying late, saying yes to more than was required. I wore my overfunctioning like a prize–and it took a toll on my health, my heart, and my energy.
So when remote work entered my life–bringing more space, humanity, and choice–my nervous system didn't immediately relax. It questioned. It doubted. It tightened. It whispered: Can I really work this way? Am I doing enough? Do I need to compensate for this flexibility?
And I know I'm not alone. Many of us feel this because we're living outside the template we were taught. Leaders feel it too–sometimes shrinking their own flexibility just to model productivity.
Here's the reframe I keep returning to: Remote work isn't the problem. Dragging old standards into a new way of working is.
✨ Practice: Reclaiming Inner Permission
Let's pause together. Place our feet on the ground. Take a slow breath in, and a long, gentle exhale out.
Now ask: "What part of me still believes I must earn the right to live with more freedom?" Just notice what arises.
Then: "Who taught me that productivity requires discomfort—and do I still want to carry that belief?"
Place a hand on your heartspace and offer yourself: "My efforts are enough. My choices are not wrong. I can live differently."
Let it settle.
Remote work is not an indulgence to defend. It's a conscious choice to build lives that honor our well-being, our wholeness, and our values. We deserve that—fully, and without apology.
