Climbing the Career Ladder in Slippers? How to Make It Actually Work

Freedom With Intentionality Beats Office Politics

Remote work is commonplace now. It is one of the benefits of the pandemic. But it isn’t something to take for granted. There are pros and cons. You need to be intentional, or you risk becoming obsolete or irrelevant. 😬

When I talk to people, their biggest worry is how to remain visible and grow in their careers when they are, effectively, “out of sight, out of mind?”

In this new era of pajama professionalism, the real flex isn’t logging the most hours or dropping into every Zoom call with a chipper “Happy Monday” attitude. It’s being intentional about where you’re headed next because career development without a cubicle still takes effort.

Here’s the truth. Visibility theater is overrated. You don’t need to always be “on” to get promoted or taken seriously. What you do need is a plan. 📄

Start with clarity.
What’s your next move?
More leadership?
A new skill set?
A seat at a different kind of table?
You can’t grow if you don’t know where you're going.
And no, just seeing what happens is not a strategy. 🙄

Now this next suggestion will seem weird to those of you who are shy about self-promotion but here goes! Overcommunicate your value. Yep. That’s right. I know that seems like strange advice. But remote work can make your impact seem invisible if you're not intentional. Start documenting wins. Speak up in meetings. Share thoughtful insights, not noise. Be the person who makes everyone’s job easier.
Learn what you need to do to be the MVP on your team. 🏅

And don’t ghost your network or take them for granted either.
Career growth still happens through relationships. 🤝
Reach out. Connect. Congratulate your peers. Ask questions.
Tune in to what’s going on. Stay current and connected.
Be the kind of human that people remember when it’s time to fill a bigger role. 😎

As a coach who helps people level up their careers, without selling their soul or moving back to a city they hate, I’ve seen that intentionality is what keeps you top of mind. Even if you work from a hammock or your favorite coffee shop, be intentional about being visible and relevant. 👀

Remote work is freedom. But it is freedom with intentionality. Keep your future in mind. Don’t be complacent. Plan your next move and then prepare for it.
