Thrive Remotely is your weekly inspiration to leverage remote work to be your advantage, not your challenge.
Hello, virtual geniuses,
Let’s be honest: remote work has created an entire generation of brilliant people soft-launching their own expertise.
You think you’re being collaborative. Polite. Easygoing.
Meanwhile, your best ideas are getting buried under “just a thought!” and “sorry if this doesn’t make sense…”
This week, we’re talking about assertiveness in remote work. Not becoming harsh, but making sure your value, boundaries, and ideas don’t quietly disappear into the screen.
Because if your communication sounds optional… people will treat it that way.
Let’s fix that.

Don't Be a Digital Doormat: The Assertive Remote’s Cheat Sheet
Assertiveness in remote work isn't about becoming a corporate shark; it’s about ensuring your boundaries don't evaporate into the cloud. Use this guide to audit your "Wifi Flavor" and upgrade your digital presence.
Phase 1: Audit Your "Wifi Flavor"
Check your last five Slack or email threads. Which one are you?
The Ghost (Passive): "Sorry to bother you... maybe we could... if you want?" You’re basically a human Ellipsis. You trade your time for people-pleasing points that don't exist.
The Caps-Lock Crusader (Aggressive): "ASAP." "Fixed yet?" You’re the reason people keep their notifications on mute.
The "Fine." (Passive-Aggressive): "Per my last email..." You’re smiling in your headshot, but your keyboard is screaming.
Phase 2: The Slack Translator
Stop hedging. Swap your default for these assertive power-moves:
Instead of (Passive/Aggressive)... | Try (Assertive)... |
"Does this time maybe work for you?" | "I’m available between 2 PM and 4 PM." |
"This is wrong. Do it again." | "I propose X instead of Y to meet our goal. Thoughts?" |
"Sorry, I'm just so busy right now." | "I need to protect my deep-work block until Tuesday." |
Phase 3: The Boundary Template
Fill in this blank the next time scope-creep comes knocking:
"I feel [emotion] when [event] because it affects [your priority]. Let’s adjust by [solution]."
Example: "I feel overwhelmed when the scope shifts mid-sprint because it affects our Friday deadline. Let’s move the new features to next week’s ticket."
