I coach business leaders around the world. Almost all of them work alone in some capacity.
Not lonely, they'd tell you. Busy!
Ten calls a day, four hundred unread emails, a team across three time zones. Alone is not the word they'd choose.
Me?
September 2019. Five and a half years as an in person PT, surrounded by people all day. I got sick of opening someone else's gym, so I took the business online and called it freedom.
What I'd actually done was swap a room full of humans for a kitchen table and a screen.
Six months later I was snacking all afternoon, training half as often and quietly declining.
I'd coached hundreds of people through exactly that. Took me another six months to spot it in myself.
The bit you can’t see
Working alone wasn’t a healthy decision. It feels like a productivity upgrade doesn't it?
No commute. No corridor small talk. No bloke from finance hovering by your desk at 4pm.
But your body doesn't see all that, it reads your inputs.
Strip the humans and the movement out of a day and it responds exactly the way it was built to.
Here's what the research actually says:
Social isolation raises your risk of dying early by 29%. Living alone, 32%. That comes from 70 studies and 3.4 million people, not a wellness blog or fitness influencer.
Loneliness carries a 29% higher risk of coronary heart disease and a 32% higher risk of stroke.
The loneliest adults aged 50 to 68 put on 14.4 mmHg more systolic blood pressure over four years than their well connected peers. It didn't show up until year two. Then it kept climbing.
Full time remote professionals sit two extra hours every single day compared with office based ones.
Read that again my desk jockeys.. Ten hours a week you used to spend walking to a train, standing in a lift, crossing an office to find somebody.
You didn't quit exercise. Exercise quit you, one deleted commute at a time.
Isolation isn't a mood. It's a measurable cardiovascular event happening in slow motion right in front of you!
Your body isn't asking for a gym membership
It's asking for two things you accidentally cancelled: contact and cadence.
Everything else in your day has an owner, a time slot and a reminder. Your nervous system has none of that, which is why it’s starting to quietly fail you.
So book it in. Four habits, all small enough to survive a bad week.
Cadence, not workouts. Timer every 45 minutes. Stand up, move for three. That's it. You're not chasing calories, you're breaking up sitting time, which damages you independently of how fit you are.
A contact minimum. One real human voice a day that isn't a work call. Phone, not text. Five minutes counts. Your nervous system cannot hear a WhatsApp.
Rebuild the commute. Walk for twenty minutes before you open the laptop and twenty after you shut it. This isn't about steps. It's the start line and the finish line your day quietly lost.
Train where somebody notices. Once a week, around people. Gym, tennis, five a side, a walk with a friend who actually talks. One session where your absence would be noticed.
The uncomfortable maths
You've built a life where nobody sees you.
No colleague clocking that you look grey. No mate saying you've slowed down. No mirror moment until a holiday photo shocks you.
That's the real physical weight of working alone. Not the isolation itself, but the absence of witnesses and accountability. This is where decline goes unchallenged for years.
Flexible work is the best professional deal I've ever had. I'm not handing it back and neither should you.
But it arrives with a bill.
Movement and human contact used to be bundled into the price of an office.
Now they're extras, and you order them yourself.
So order them…
Your longevity is being written today right now.
