Thrive Remotely champions of our sovereignty as remote and independent professionals, turning our isolation into mastery so we can thrive on our own terms.

Hello, remote performers,

Let's be honest.

If you've ever moved your mouse just to stay green... this one's for you.

Somewhere along the way, remote work became a performance. Fast replies. Green dots. Calendars packed with "quick syncs."

Meanwhile, the people doing the best work are often the ones who look the least busy.

This week, we're ditching digital presenteeism and replacing it with something far more valuable: real outcomes.

Because your job isn't to look productive.

It's to create value.

SELF-LEADERSHIP

Untangling the Squishy Signals of Pretend Productivity and Digital Presenteeism

From Rachel Thompson

By noticing when Trader Joe’s is open

The Trader Joe’s near me has a transparent automatic door, a big chalkboard with open hours, lights on inside, and plants outside. I can look inside and see the activity.

It’s sending a collection of strong signals inviting me to ‘come on in’ and shop for groceries.

Those signals change when the store is closed and the door is locked.  The power of a locked door isn’t how secure the lock is, but the signal it sends and the expectation it sets.

Digital presenteeism and pretend productivity send mixed signals with squishy expectations that undermine both the invitation to engage and the power of ‘do not disturb’ mode for deep work.

So, how might you untangle the signals?

QUICK TAKES

The Show Doesn’t Have To Go On

🎭 "Remote Workers Are Wasting More Than an Hour a Day on Productivity Theater" proves what we've already known: the boss was never the real problem, unmanaged instinct was. Sixty seven minutes a day spent performing isn't flexibility, it's fear wearing a badge. Real Self-Leadership means trusting your output enough to log off mid sentence. Confidence replaces the need for visible motion. Focus replaces the need for constant reply. Allies who master this don't need a manager's authority, they build their own. That discipline is Sovereign, not slack.

🎭 "AI's Fake Productivity: Designing For Real Impact" confirms the trap we've been naming all along. AI didn't invent productivity theater, it just gave everyone a faster costume. A polished deck means nothing if you can't name the decision it enabled. That's the real Self-Leadership test: can you defend your own impact without a manager grading your output? Confidence isn't a clean Slack summary, it's knowing your work moved something real. Allies who lead themselves don't chase signal, they build proof. Autopilot busy is still just busy.

🎭 “‘Productivity Theater' Is Officially Out of Control at Work. Here's How to Prevent It" puts the fix in leadership's hands. We put it in yours. Waiting for your company to shift from inputs to outputs is a bet against your own sovereignty. Allies don't need a mission statement to know their worth, they track their own results and communicate them on their terms. Focus isn't a policy handed down, it's a boundary you build. Motivation doesn't come from culture decks, it comes from running your own practice. Purpose is self-appointed, not assigned.

News to Use

🔆 The Office Comeback Faces One Big Problem: Workers Still Aren’t Showing Up. A new CBRE survey found nearly 90% of employers now expect at least three office days per week, but actual attendance continues to lag behind expectations.

🔆 How rigid return-to-office policies fuel employee attrition. The office has become a stage. Too many employees now believe their performance and appearance matters more than the work.

🔆 A study asked people to spend fifteen minutes a week walking outdoors while deliberately looking for things that amazed them, and by the eighth week their selfies showed them smaller in the frame and smiling more. A simple practice–noticing what amazes you on a walk–made people literally shrink in their own photographs, revealing something profound about how awe reshapes our sense of self.
