Becoming Our Own Witness

A few weeks ago, I closed my laptop after a good day – a hard conversation handled well, a project moving forward, a powerful breakthrough with a client – and before any of it had time to register, I was met with the next thought already reaching for what I hadn't done.

That's when I noticed it: I'd stopped witnessing myself.

In remote work, there's rarely anyone else to do it for us. No one glancing over after a strong call. No hallway "nice work" on the way to the kitchen. The moments that used to get reflected back to us now just... pass through, unmarked.

Our bodies notice the absence before our minds do. A flatness after finishing something. A low hum of restlessness that has no clear cause. Not burnout, exactly – more like a nervous system that's stopped receiving proof it's doing okay.

Left alone, attention drifts toward what's missing. Not because anything's wrong, but because unwitnessed effort doesn't register as effort at all. We humans have a negativity bias — wired to scan for threat, not to savor safety. It kept us alive once. In remote work, with no one else registering our wins, that same wiring quietly convinces us nothing landed at all.

The shift isn't confidence-building in the motivational sense. It's simpler: noticing what's already true before the mind minimizes it, talks us out of it, or simply moves on.

🌬️ Practice: The Evidence Pause

As you close your laptop today, pause. Put a hand on your chest to help you land in your body.

Ask:

  • What went well today?

  • What did I move through with more steadiness than I expected?

  • Where am I already reaching for "what's next" before I've let what I've done actually register?

Name two or three things – not minimized, not qualified, not rushed past. Just evidence.

Close your eyes and take a breath to honor each recognition, letting it register in the body.

We don't need to convince ourselves we're exceptional. We need to become our own witness — and stop letting good days pass by unmarked.
