There's a quiet shift happening, one I notice in my clients, in my own life, and in conversations around remote and flexible work. More people are questioning the old rules. More people are craving lives that feel humane, aligned, and internally spacious – not just efficient.
And it often begins with a single, uncomfortable recognition.
Without the noise of office culture or the pressure of being observed, many of my clients notice a pattern: they show up fully for their teams, their leaders, their clients – but not with the same care or fairness for themselves. They extend understanding and compassion outward. Rarely inward.
That's where The Equality Shift begins – and it's a practice I've been cultivating in my own life for years. I began engaging it when the way of working that had been glorified for me – constant availability, output-first identity, pushing through exhaustion – started to seriously impact my health. My body made it impossible to ignore what my mind had been rationalizing for a long time.
It's the practice of coming into right relationship with ourselves: holding our own needs, energy, and capacity with the same respect we extend to others.
Not as the engine that keeps everything running—but as a stakeholder whose wellbeing shapes the whole system.
The glorification of overwork isn't a remote work problem. It's a workplace culture challenge that shows up everywhere. But remote workers have a unique opportunity to do things differently, because we create the environmental culture of our immediate surroundings. We get to decide what's glorified here.
And that is no small thing.
Because the truth is simple: we cannot be in a sustainable relationship with our work if we are in a depleting relationship with the person doing it.
✨ A Reflective Practice
Take one small moment today to ask:
“If I treated myself with the same fairness I offer others, what would I allow? What would I adjust? What would I stop apologizing for?”
Small, honest answers to these questions change everything.
