Discover Your Third Space

Michelle Coulson is the CEO and Founder of Remote Rebellion. She helps people to design their dream lives with more freedom and flexibility by getting a remote job that they can do from anywhere. Originally from the UK, Michelle worked as a recruiter for 7 years. During lockdown, she was forced to work remotely, so she took advantage and worked from Bali instead of London!

Then when the ‘return to office’ call came in 2021, she said NO, quit her job and set up Remote Rebellion.

Typically your first space is your home and your second is your workplace. A third space is that “in-between” spot such as your favourite cafe, the gym, or even your local pub.

But as a remote worker, the lines are blurred between your home & where you work. So a lot of remote workers tend to have a 2nd space, not a third at all.

Right now, I’m sitting in a co-working space in Bansko, Bulgaria and honestly- I spend more time here than I do anywhere else. It’s where I get my best work done, chat with other remote workers, and drink way too much coffee.

So I guess this would be my 1st space, my home my second and the ski slopes my third space!

Back when I was in Bali, I spent more time at home and in my favourite co-working spot and my third space was the CrossFit gym. I’d show up for the workouts, but I stayed for the people. It’s funny how these spaces shift depending on where you’re at in life (and in the world).

Why Your Third Space Matters

  • They change with you: Some days, you need quiet focus in a cafĂ©. Other times, it’s a gym or a park. Wherever you’re at in life, your third space evolves with you.

  • They connect you: Your third space is where you find your people—those who get your lifestyle and you can yourself in.

  • They inspire you: Whether it’s fresh coffee in a buzzing cafĂ© or endorphins at the gym, new spaces give you fresh energy and ideas.

How to Find Yours

  1. Ask yourself: What do I need right now—focus, movement, or connection?

  2. Try new places: A co-working hub, a social club, or even the library. You’ll know when it feels right.

  3. Let it evolve: Your third space today might be your second space tomorrow. That’s OK!

For remote workers, especially those who work from home, third spaces are necessary to ensure you get the social interaction you need.

They’re where you work, unwind, and maybe even discover a new part of yourself.

So, what’s your third space?

Elevating My Third Space: Where I Find My Strongest Support

In my last column, The Power of Declaring Your Vision, I shared my journey of learning how to be clear in my desires for the future. Many people think this is something you have to spend a lot of time with to get clear, but in reality your vision is already inside of you and all you need is a little help accessing it.

For years, my mornings started with a 7 AM walk. Living a block from the beach in South Florida, I would spring out of bed, eager to greet the day, reflect on my goals, and think through challenges. These walks fueled my creativity, brought clarity, and gave me space to process my thoughts.

Throughout the day, I’d take shorter walks—15-minute resets to reconnect with my body and review my next steps. I loved these moments of clarity, yet something inside me kept whispering: There’s an easier way.

At the time, I believed I just needed to think more, analyze more, and eventually, I’d figure everything out. But at the time, I didn’t realize that the mind has built-in limitations—it only allows us to reflect so far. Like in the movie Inside Out, some beliefs are buried so deep that we don’t even think to question them. We adjust only the things we can see, but the biggest breakthroughs come from the things we can’t.

That realization led me to hiring a professional mentor. Someone who could help me access those unseen places within myself, guiding me to release what was actually holding me back from what I wanted.

Now, my most sacred "third" space isn’t my walks—it’s my one-on-one coaching virtual room. A space where I can show up raw, be deeply supported, and receive the right questions that unlock the biggest breakthroughs with the least effort.

From that space, I create more of what I want—without working harder or doing more.

Where are you finding your best support right now?  What struggles or questions would you like me to address in future stories? Your input can shape what I write next.
