If your weekly routine is mostly screen time and solo work, your brain might be quietly filing a complaint.
Remote work has a lot going for it. No commute. Fewer interruptions. The freedom to take an important call without pretending the office coffee is good. But there is one habit worth taking seriously: regularly interacting with actual humans. Ideally more than just your dog or the barista who spells your name wrong.
It is not just good for your mood. It is good for your brain.
A 2025 study from the Chicago Health and Aging Project found that both social isolation and loneliness were linked to cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Even people who did not feel lonely were affected if they lacked regular interaction.
More research backs this up. A 2023 review in Nature Aging found that higher social participation was linked to a 30 to 50 percent lower risk of dementia. A 2024 analysis from the National Institute on Aging found loneliness was associated with a 31 percent higher risk.
So yes, your brain would like you to leave the house occasionally.
You do not need to become the host of every group chat or organize a weekly potluck. But you do need conversations that challenge you, make you think, and occasionally make you laugh in a way that emojis cannot quite deliver.
Keep it simple. A standing lunch. A walk. Coworking for an afternoon. Something that reminds you the world is bigger than your screen.
Because while Slack is efficient, it has never once surprised you with a great idea.
Your brain deserves better.
